Cesari Amarone ~ 2006

The one in the middle is the true gem.

Cesari Amarone

2006

Grapes: Corvina,

Aged 2-3 years in large Slovenian Oak

Price – $36 – $55

This could be one of the best values I have found. Drinking it is truly an experience.

Amarone is a wine from three grapes, Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. What makes Amarone special, and gives it its power is the fact that the grapes are dried before they are pressed. This concentrates the sugars and the result is spectacular.

The initial scents are reminiscent of dark fruits but it is not overpowering. It isn’t until you take the first sip that the experience begins. Chocolate covered cherries, dried apricots and plum are the primary fruit, but nothing is out of balance. It is as if the flavors are coming at you on a wave of silk. The smoothness is overt. As you are savoring the fruit basket, the finish appears with hints dark chocolate, hazelnut and espresso. The tannins are pleasant and mild.

After taking the first sip, you will look at the glass as if to say, “Wow, never saw that coming.” The next step is a swirl, a nod of approval and that ever satisfying second sip. Enjoy. And then buy another one to put away for another day.
